Under the guise of acceptable toxicity levels, we exist with a plague of our own making. We employ chemicals with callous disregard towards species we depend upon so dearly. 4 imagesIn pursuit of awareness towards our destructive environmental practices, I confront of the absurdity of human negligence towards our planet. My work often challenges traditional boundaries through the examination of visual chaos juxtaposed by beauty. Active environmentalism is not enough these days, as governmental agencies fail to regulate the expansion into public lands while under the influence of special interests. History offers us warnings that as a culture we continue to disregard. As a species, we practice an unholy trinity towards nature; conquer, consume and discard.

11 images“Inevitable Collapse” explores the repercussions of honeybee colony collapse and warns of a foreboding future. The application of pesticides has led to unprecedented declines in bee and pollinating insect numbers. Our symbiotic relationship with pollinating insects remains crucial to our food production. Assaulting our partners in agriculture translates to a direct attack upon humanity. As a visual artist, I demand a call to action for one of the most crucial issues of our time. By utilizing poisons in my process, the undeniable truth of humankind’s folly becomes irrefutable through the narrative of the fallen honeybee. The original 11x16.5 and 11.5x11.5 inch chromogenic prints are one off creations distressed with herbicides and pesticides. The prints are outgassed for six weeks prior to framing. 10 imagesThe place that exists between the abstract and the landscape. Time shifted jet lag, high speed rail and long exposure alters one perception during a brief trip along the Narita Express. Agrarian scenes mix with transportation byways highlighting the space between two places.

16 imagesDuring late September 2020 after a very dry summer season, a series of storms that delivered more lightning than precipitation igniting the Santa Cruz mountains into a blaze that has not been seen for generations. The fuel of dry brush and redwood and pine forest went ablaze into a ferocious firestorm that areas in and surrounding Big Basin State Park, home to some of the oldest redwood groves in the state. Over a bleak few afternoons I photographed the devastation that the Santa Cruz Lightning fire left for the residents of Boulder Creek, CA. Upon visiting one destroyed home of a fellow artist, we shared some memories as well as sadness. Both of us were disgusted with Trump and FEMA support. I felt his loss in surmountable terms. He has lived in Boulder Creek for thirty years and raised three children on his property along with his wife. An artist who works in metal sculpture as well as masonry had years of work wiped from existence. Years of his work are scattered about in ruin along with family possessions, heirlooms, children’s toys and memories. I felt overwhelmed by the sorrow in this man’s eyes. I asked him how his insurance company was assisting him and another nightmare story unfolded. Needless to say, please read the fine text in your home insurance agreement regarding natural disasters, fires, etc. to verify your coverage is actually going to be there when you need it. Regardless, federal support for the victims of these fires remain tantamount. Please donate if you can and support these folks.
